Kids Learn Vital 21st Century Skills while having fun playing and coding with LEGO®!

Coding with Robotics is a great way for kids to make an early start on the jobs of the future. That’s what this article and many others are saying. There are great resources for learning to code online, but there is nothing like hands-on Robotics to help apply coding in a very tangible and enjoyable way, which is why we love LEGO Education so much. And while we’re serious about teaching computational thinking, coding, problem solving and teamwork skills, kids have lots of fun in doing all sorts of Robotics games and competitions at our camps. Just check out our previous Summer Camp videos on YouTube.

Prep for Provincial and World Robotics Competitions

Over the summer we spend some of our time with the older kids (Grades 4 and up) using FIRST LEGO League field sets and GearBots BCIT Coding Challenge mats to challenge kids to work in teams to solve robotic challenges in a fun, engaging way. During the school year we take select teams of students to FLL Provincial championships as well as the BCIT Coding Challenge in the spring. We took 2 teams this year to FLL and 3 teams to GearBots, with great success and learning experience all around.

Want to see more robotics at your school?

We provide both after school and In-Class Science curriculum aligned programming for schools in 8 week formats, so if you are interested in bringing that to your school, check out our flyers here: In Class Enrichment Programs, Sample After School Flyer. Or contact us on the website.

FIRST LEGO League BC Regional Championship Tournament News – Both our Teams in the top 10!

We took two teams, the Ballistic Parrots from University Hill Elementary and Mr. Noodles from Lord Kitchener Elementary and Ecole Jules Quesnel,  to the FIRST LEGO League BC Regional Championship Tournament in Victoria, BC, on February 4th, 2017. Both teams did incredibly well and we all had an amazing time at the tournament. 29 teams in total representing schools from across the province were there. The teams presented research projects on solutions for animals in danger from human intervention, and participated in tournament robot races. Mr. Noodles came in 4th place and Ballistic Parrots in 9th, so both in the top 10! Our coach, Barish Golland, won the Coach/Mentor award for outstanding work coaching the UHill LEGO Robotics Club team and several other schools. We’re super proud of both teams and thank all the parent volunteers who helped make this memorable event happen. For photos check out our Facebook Album!

LEGO Robotics Fall 2016 Registration Now Open! – Special Discount until August 15th

Fall 2016 Programs – Registration Opens August 1st!

We’re very excited to launch our Fall 2016 Robotics Programs, and you’re the first to know! Registration opens today on our website and we’re offering returning parents a special 10% discount until August 15th. This fall we have Robotics programs at UHill Elementary, École Jules Quesnel, Norma Rose Point, Vancouver Talmud Torah, Trafalgar Elementary and Lord Kitchener Elementary. So what’s new for Robotics in the upcoming 2016-2017 school year?

Increased Student to Teacher Ratio

We’re thrilled to be able to offer a 6 to 1 student to teacher ratio this fall, for even more hands-on, high-touch support in developing computational thinking, engineering skills, problem solving and more. We have an amazing group of very talented and highly skilled Robotics Instructors that are true role models to the younger generation. We have with us UBC students soon to be Mathematicians, Integrated and Electrical Engineers, Computer Scientists, and Cognitive Systems experts. A lot of nerd power in the room!

More Advanced Coding Languages

With the help of our computer science instructor, we’re introducing more advanced programming tools like RobotC for Mindstorms and Scratch for WeDo 2.0 that more closely simulate coding languages used in the robotics/software engineering industries.  These programming languages will be accessible to students who have completed and show competency in previous Robotics levels using the LabView and WeDo visual building block programming interfaces.

FIRST Lego League Robotics Competition coming to town, fingers crossed!

We are coordinating our efforts with interested parent volunteers and the Victoria, B.C. FLL chapter to bring the internationally acclaimed FIRST LEGO League Robotics competition back to Vancouver! This year’s theme is Animal Allies, “all about our furry, feathered and finned friends.” We hope to have a representative qualifying team from each of our schools represented at either the FLL or BCIT GearBots SkillsBC Robotics Challenge coming up next Spring 2017.  Stay tuned for more details to come!

No Robotics Program at your school yet?

If there is no STEM/Robotics programs being offered at your daughter/son’s school and if you think there will be interest in starting one, please contact us with details of how we can coordinate with the PAC or Principal to make this happen. We also offer classroom solutions during the school day for introducing STEM, Robotics and applied, hands-on coding lessons that align with the new BC Science curriculum learning outcomes and help with BC’s new initiative to introduce coding in schools.

Videos from RoboCamps

We have lots of videos posted already from Week 1 and Week 2 of Summer LEGO Robotics Camp, and more to come at the end of August. Every week is unique and some of the Robotics creations students come up with have been truly amazing!

Have a great end of summer!

Wishing you a very relaxing and fun-filled rest of the summer, and hope to see you soon!

Warm regards,

Ana Golland

FIRST LEGO League Trash Trek

first_trash_trek

We’re super excited to introduce for the first time a full FIRST LEGO League Challenge missions program at our schools where students have already completed the Space Challenge Journey to Mars missions last semester.  With the Trash Trek challenge, students will learn all about problem solving solutions to one of the biggest problems today, dealing responsibly with trash and making a difference for the environment. Here is more information about the FLL Trash Trek Challenge:

Trash Trek Robot Game | Trash Trek Challenge Overview | More about FIRST LEGO League

MIT Scratch and LEGO Education

grafico-wedo-scratch

For students who have already completed the introductory and advanced levels of LEGO WeDo, we’re introducing more advanced coding opportunities by integrating MIT’s Scratch coding system directly with LEGO WeDo and Simple Machines elements for a fun, challenging new program.

youtube_video_1youtube_video_3youtube_video_2

What’s New in 2015?

  • A first in Vancouver! – Partnering with RoboCamp’s amazing online Robotics tutorials so kids can build even better and more awesome robotic  machines and learn about the real ones too!
  • Now at Norma Rose Point School! – We just opened classes for both K-Gr2 (LEGO WeDo) and Gr3-5 (Mindstorms EV3/NXT) at Norma Rose Point on Tuesdays 3:15-5pm – there are still spots available so register here!
  • We’re helping teachers bring LEGO Education to the classroom – We’re excited to be volunteering with UHill Elementary teachers to bring LearnToLearn and StoryStarter kits right into the classroom, helping kids learn cross-curricular and literacy skills in a fun, hands-on way.
  • BotCamp – coming up this March spring break, we’re opening up two weeks of Robotics morning sessions at University Chapel, UBC. Kids can build and program even bigger, more complex Robotics machines not seen in our afternoon programs thanks to our full fleet of Expansion Set kits.  Here’s a video sneak peek from last year!
