The goal of these programs is to help children grow in what is commonly known as 21st Century skills, the skills they will need to succeed in the future job market:
We have an amazing group of very talented and highly skilled Robotics Instructors that are true role models to the younger generation. We have with us UBC students soon to be Mathematicians, Integrated and Electrical Engineers, Computer Scientists, and Cognitive Systems experts. A lot of nerd power in the room! We maintain a 6 to 1 student to teacher ratio for even more hands-on, high-touch support in developing computational thinking, engineering skills, and problem solving.
We have been introducing students to more advanced programming tools like RobotC for Mindstorms and Scratch for WeDo 2.0, which more closely simulate coding languages used in the robotics/software engineering industries. These programming languages will be accessible to students who have completed and show competency in previous Robotics levels using the LabView and WeDo visual building block programming interfaces.
This past year we joined our efforts with interested parent volunteers and the Victoria, B.C. First Lego League chapter and sent two select school teams to the internationally acclaimed FIRST LEGO League Robotics competition. The event took place in Victoria, last February 2017 and was an amazing experience for all involved. This year we are preparing a few teams again. The 2017-18 theme is Hydro-Dynamics. The teams are formed in September, and will be expected to work on their projects through the Fall and part of Winter in preparation for competitions in February 2018.
Additionally, we will also be working with a representative qualifying team from some of our schools to participate in the BCIT GearBots Skills BC Robotics Challenge coming up this Spring 2018. More info, check our Competition Page.
